What happened

In July 2021 roughly 741kg of cocaine (reported by some outlets as 751kg, worth an estimated R286 to R300 million) was seized at Aeroton south of Johannesburg after arriving from Brazil through Durban harbour. The scene was poorly preserved, R55 million of the haul later went missing, and police officers were arrested at the scene for allegedly trying to steal from it. In June 2026 the commission heard forensic evidence from a suspect's phone pointing to an organised syndicate - encrypted chats, a contact known only as 'Alpha', and an alleged insider at Transnet steering which berth the ship used at Durban - and then heard how the police watchdog, IPID, investigated the very officers who made the arrests.
