What it is

Twenty live impala antelope that, according to WhatsApp evidence shown to the commission, alleged tender beneficiary Vusumuzi 'Cat' Matlala arranged to gift to suspended SAPS deputy national commissioner Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya in March 2024, routed through an alleged intermediary. About three months later Matlala's company was awarded a roughly R360 million SAPS tender.

Why it matters

The impala became the most talked-about alleged inducement of the inquiry - an everyday image of game animals standing in for the question of whether gifts bought influence over police contracts. Sibiya denies it, telling the commission no animal was ever delivered to his plot. The allegation is contested testimony, not a finding.
