Warrant Officer Sander's coffee machine

What it is

A personal coffee machine kept by veteran Hawks narcotics investigator Warrant Officer Karl Sander in his office at the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI). Sander testified it was stolen from inside the DPCI, and that he was later subjected to a polygraph test over it. He described the machine as his 'only safe space'. The public response was an outpouring of donations that raised hundreds of thousands of rand to replace it.

Why it matters

The small theft became a symbol of how Sander says he was sidelined and pressured. He told the commission he was on leave when the 541kg cocaine went missing yet was made to take a polygraph and had his coffee machine taken; an administrative review later found the polygraph procedurally flawed and Sander was effectively exonerated. The object humanises the alleged internal targeting of a whistleblowing officer. On 19 June 2026 Major General Lesetja Senona disputed that framing, telling the commission the polygraphs followed a run of four office thefts - a state camera, a state laptop, a laminating machine and the coffee machine - that pointed to an inside job, that Brigadier Nyuswa initiated them, and that Sander 'misled the commission'. Untested.
