Hearing record

Day 134

Day 134, 7 July 2026. The Madlanga Commission continued leading evidence against suspended SAPS Crime Intelligence deputy head Major-General Feroz Khan in his absence, with Khan still hospitalised after the 28 June shooting. Evidence leader Advocate Adila Hassim SC took the commission through Khan's alleged unexplained wealth: records that, she submitted, showed income of roughly two-and-a-half times his police salary from undisclosed sources, a car-parts business generating about R3 million a year, some 30 vehicles bought in a single year and a property portfolio estimated at about R39 million, alongside an allegation that Khan helped manipulate a tender to supply car parts to SAPS. Evidence leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson SC then led WhatsApp messages from Khan's seized phone which he said show Khan and tobacco businessman Mohamed 'Mo' Sayed plotting to trap the then Inspector-General of Intelligence, Dr Setlhomamaru Dintwe, into a false statement so that his removal could be demanded - an 11-12 June 2021 exchange of prepared questions in which Khan allegedly wrote 'this should get him to lie, and in return we can ask for his removal coz he lied', with EFF leader Julius Malema referenced as having sent questions ('Juju sent me now'). Malema, who is not a commission witness, filed a responding affidavit that was read into the record, denying that he conspired to orchestrate Dintwe's removal and saying he could not verify the authenticity of the messages. The commission also confirmed it had asked the Presidency for more time, its interim and final reports being due by 31 August 2026. All allegations are untested; Khan and Malema are presumed innocent.
