Hearing record
Day 130
Day 130, 1 July 2026. Suspended SAPS Crime Intelligence deputy head Major-General Feroz Khan, summoned to begin his testimony before the Madlanga Commission, could not appear: he remained in a critical condition at Milpark Hospital after being shot in an apparent assassination attempt outside his Houghton home on Sunday 28 June 2026. His legal team instead argued an application - filed at 11:04pm on the night of the shooting - for parts of his evidence to be heard in camera, citing intelligence-sensitive information. Chairperson Mbuyiseli Madlanga rejected it as fatally vague, saying 'We are completely in the dark. It is vague; I could go further and say it is hopeless,' and that nothing stopped the commission dismissing it on vagueness alone; counsel Advocate Zubair Khan conceded it was not ready and withdrew it, undertaking to refile once his client could give instructions. The commission also rebuked Khan's team for accusing the inquiry of leaks. The lawyers said Khan was sedated and unable to speak, invited the commissioners to verify his condition in hospital, and submitted a J88 medical report and photographs to counter speculation that the shooting was staged. The commission said it would engage Khan's lawyers on the way forward. All allegations remain untested; Khan is presumed innocent.
